Where to put information from a 1099-DIV

When preparing a return, you need to enter the information from source documents to the tax program.  Because the treatment of 1099-DIV items can be entered into different areas, we created this sheet you can use to assist you when entering the information. 

  • Box 1
    • 1a) Total Ordinary Dividends-> Dividend statement under ordinary dividends
    • 1b) Qualified Dividends-> Dividend statement under qualified dividends
  • Box 2
    • 2a) Total Capital Gains Dist.-> Dividend Statement under capital gain
    • 2b) Unrecaptured Section 1250 Gain-> Dividend statement under 1250 gain
    • 2c) Section 1202 Gain-> Sch D on the capital gains wkt
    • 2d) Collectibles (28%) gain-> Dividend statement under the 28% gain (this also flows to sch D)
    • 2e) Section 897 Ordinary Dividends-> not for US residents
    • 2f) Section 897 Capital Gains-> not for US residents
  • Box 3) Non-dividend Distributions-> Not reportable until the amount is in excess of the basis, then goes on Capital Gains wkt
  • Box 4) Federal Income Tax Withheld-> Dividend statement under Fed. With.
  • Box 5) Section 199a Dividends-> Part of QBI, goes on the 8995/8995-A
  • Box 6) Investment Expenses-> Sch A on the other deductions wkt
  • Box 7) Foreign Tax Paid-> Form 1116
  • Box 9) Cash Liquidation Distribution-> sch D on the capital gains wkt
  • Box 10) Non-Cash Liquidation Distribution-> sch D on the capital gains wkt
  • Box 12) Exempt-Interest Dividends-> Dividend statement under exempt int. Div.
  • Box 13) Specified Private Activity Bond Interest Dividends-> Dividend statement under AMT PAB (this also flows to 6251)
  • Boxes 14, 15, & 16) State Info-> goes on the state
