To add a State to a return, navigate to the Main Information sheet. Scroll down until you find the State Information section. You will find different residency status fields where you may enter the taxpayer's state abbreviation to load the state forms.
In the Online software, no updates are needed. In the Desktop software, ensure you've gone to Communications -> Get Module Updates to download and install any available state updates.
