As of the tax year 2011, the W-2 form contains a check box that should be checked when a return is filed with an ITIN. The field to the right of the check box is highlighted in red, and the Employee SSN field (Box D) looks to this new field for the ID number.

The taxpayer/spouse ID number listed on the Main Information Sheet is an ITIN. Enter the ID number (SSN or ITIN) as shown on the actual W-2.
You need to manually enter the ID shown on the W-2 form your client received in the red field.
