We recommend that you update your forms and program files frequently. Maintaining updated form and program files helps prevent e-file rejection errors and ensures greater accuracy for all your returns.
The program's Updates feature is fast and thorough. Simply connect to the Internet and click the Updates button on the Return Manager toolbar. The program opens the Updates window, where you can choose from the following options:
Click Automatic to update your program and the forms you select in Preferences*Form_Updates_tab
Click Preferences to set or adjust your form update preferences*Form_Updates_tab
Click Manual to connect to the update servers and open the Update Manager
If the Update Manager indicates that a program update is available by displaying a check in the box in the upper right of the manager, we recommend that you accept that selection. Form updates often require specific program updates to function correctly.
The Update Manager includes filters similar to those found in the Select Forms list:
Updates Available - Displays any updates available for forms you have already installed.
Available Now - Displays available forms that you have not yet installed.
The two columns on the right side of the Update Manager indicate whether forms have been approved for paper filing and if the version of the form on your computer is the most current.
The indicator in the upper right of the Update Manager tells you if your program files are current. If your program is up to date, you will see a message stating this condition. If your program files are outdated, the box will be checked, and the statement will read Include program updates. If you want to update only a few forms and exclude available program updates, remove this check mark.
When you have finished selecting the updates you want to download, click the Download button on the toolbar.
After downloading new files, your program and forms are updated the next time you open the program. The update process does not overwrite Master Form customizations*Customizing_Master_Forms. It stores the newer forms in case you want to restore your customizations.
You can also schedule automatic program and form updates on program startup and also update your forms every day at a specified time by selecting the check box on the Automatic Update*Update_program_and_forms_on_startup_and_schedule_updates tab in your program's Preferences.
If you purchased the Premium Shipping package, you will receive additional CDs from time to time during the filing season. The CD release notes provide additional detail about the updates included with that edition.
Standard Shipping customers receive the first CD and the final Archive CD later in the fall. If you use multiple computers in your business, be sure to update all your computers for the best results.
